Το 1994 με λίγα χρόνια εμπειρίας στο σκάκι είχα την ευκαιρία να αντιμετωπίσω σε μία Πανεπιστημιάδα, στον πρώτο γύρο της, τον GM Γιάννη Παππαιωάννου. Ακόμη τότε δεν ήταν GM, αλλά ένας πολλά υποσχόμενος Διεθνής Μαιτρ με ελο 2405. Ήταν μία ενδιαφέρουσα, τουλάχιστον για εμένα, παρτίδα, αφού πάντα το να παίζεις με καλύτερους παίκτες σε κάνει και εσένα καλύτερο. Για παράδειγμα, πριν την παρτίδα δεν είχα ξαναδεί το σχέδιο που έπαιξε ο μαύρος, ενώ μετά από αυτή βρήκα την ίδια ιδέα στην παρτίδα ανάμεσα στον Robert James Fischer και τον Ulf Andersson.
